We first came to Le Phare in 2009 for a 24-hour stay. Having no prior knowledge of the facilities, we were somewhat concerned facing this unknown entity. We know Jérémy by heart. We know how he functions, his routine, his needs. The mother in me felt guilty about entrusting him to “strangers,” as if I needed help taking care of my child, as if I was giving up, as if I wasn’t a good enough mother. Upon arriving at Le Phare, however, I realized that the need to take a breather was undeniable.
It’s difficult to disconnect as a parent, but even more so when you have a sick child. In addition to being a mom, I also play the role of nurse. I didn’t work for over thirteen years to provide Jérémy with full-time care. During those years, Marc, Jérémy’s dad, often worked seven days a week to provide for us financially. As we navigated this storm, we ended up forgetting everything that existed around us. It was exhausting.
When you enter Le Phare, it’s completely magical. Each child is welcomed as if they were in their own home. Le Phare is like a second family for Jérémy.
— Cynthia, Jeremy’s mother
Jérémy was less than a year old when we came to Le Phare for the very first time. Jérémy is still a very young boy at heart, despite being 16 years old. He has a brain malformation that primarily causes epilepsy, as well as severe intellectual and physical disabilities. It was his neurologist who referred us to Le Phare’s services following an unfortunately unsuccessful operation, one which left us with no options for controlling his epilepsy.
The ability to remember that we were a couple before we became parents, that is what Le Phare facilitates for us, with no judgment, in such a caring manner, and it’s completely free of charge!
Le Phare is a true balm for the heart, giving us a place we can trust for Jérémy, where he will be properly and lovingly cared for by the most wonderful people, while we take care of ourselves. And for Jérémy, his stays at Le Phare are veritable vacations!
Le Phare must continue to exist for families like ours, but also for all those who will be faced with similar challenges.
Because we need you. Because hundreds of other families need you.
— Cynthia and Marc, 16-year-old Jérémy’s parents.
